What is Lone Mountain Turquoise?

The Lone Mountain Turquoise mine, originally called the Blue Jay mine, is located near Tonapah, Nevada. The Lone Mountain Mine was first claimed by Lee Hand in 1920, but is now owned by Gene Wadell, and operated by Chris Lott. Though most of the Turquoise coming out of the Lone Mountain Turquoise mine today is of a clear blue natural or with very little matrix, such as this particular nugget, the mine is actually famous for it's beautiful blue Spiderweb Turquoise. The Lone Mountain Spiderweb Turquoise which made the mine famous is a medium blue to a gray blue with black and mahogany brown fine spiderweb matrix. Lone Mountain Turquoise is noted for its ability to hold color and not fade.

Turquoise is an opaque, blue-to-green mineral that is a hydrated phosphate of copper and aluminum. Turquoise deposits probably form in more than one way. However, a typical turquoise deposit begins with hydrothermal deposition of copper sulfides. This takes place when hydrothermal fluids leach copper from a host rock, which is typically an intrusion of calk-alkaline rock with a moderate to high silica content that is relatively oxidized. The copper is redeposited in more concentrated form as a copper porphyry in which veins of copper sulfide fill joints and fractures in the rock. Deposition takes place mostly in the potassic alteration zone, which is characterized by conversion of existing feldspar to potassium feldspar and deposition of quartz and micas at a temperature of 400–600 °C (752–1,112 °F)

Additional Info:

Azteca Designs jewelry is hand-fabricated one unique piece at a time by me!  Most of my work features intentional oxidation and patina. This finish is not meant to be removed, however, a small polishing cloth is included with silver jewelry orders and you may use this to gently clean your silver jewelry if it begins to tarnish.

Some gemstones are more delicate than others. Please wear pieces with care. I recommend removing all jewelry before strenuous activity or bathing/swimming.

Most orders ship in 1-3 business days.

Please contact me with any questions you may have PRIOR to making your purchase!
